Countries Urged to Increase Efforts to Develop Domestic Debt Markets

At a joint MEFMI/IMF regional workshop in Arusha, officials were urged to deepen domestic debt markets as one of the most efficient means of government funding.

MEFMI conducted a joint regional workshop on Domestic Debt Issuance and Trading with the IMF from 29 May to 2 June 2023 in Arusha, Tanzania. The workshop opened with remarks on behalf of the Permanent Secretary in Tanzania's Ministry of Finance and Planning, emphasising that developed domestic debt markets are one of the most efficient funding means for governments.

Officials were encouraged to forge professional networks with peers to exchange practical experiences on debt management. The workshop was delivered through presentations and hands-on exercises, including the valuation of Treasury Bills and Bonds and a case study on building a benchmark bond programme for a hypothetical economy — reinforcing the need for a well-defined strategy to develop liquid domestic debt markets.
